Accurate Definition of
Cardiovascular Disease

Having a sound definition of cardiovascular disease serves as a guideline for heart healthy eating. Whole plant-based foods offer the best nutrients for maintaining the integrity of your circulatory system.

And what does the word cardiovascular really mean?

The Collins English Dictionary states: Of or relating to the heart and the blood vessels.

The American Science Heritage Dictionary defines the word as: Relating to or involving the heart and blood vessels.

And here’s what the Mosby's Medical Dictionary offers us: Etymology: Gk, kardia + L, vasculum, small vessel: pertaining to the heart and blood vessels.

So in establishing a sound definition we arrive at the Greek rooting of the word to be “small vessel disease.” We can go a step further and say small vessel disease relating to or involving the heart and blood vessels.

I searched several medical websites for a definition and quote from MedicineNet.com which offers the following:

Heart disease: Any disorder that affects the heart. Sometimes the term "heart disease" is used narrowly and incorrectly as a synonym for coronary artery disease. Heart disease is synonymous with cardiac disease but not with cardiovascular disease which is any disease of the heart or blood vessels.

And this is MedicineNet’s description of the term Cardiovascular:

The circulatory system comprising the heart and blood vessels which carries nutrients and oxygen to the tissues of the body and removes carbon dioxide and other wastes from them.

This website further states:

Cardiovascular diseases affect the heart and blood vessels and include arteriosclerosis, coronary artery disease, heart valve disease, arrhythmia, heart failure, hypertension, orthostatic hypotension, shock, endocarditis, diseases of the aorta, and its branches, disorders of the peripheral vascular system, and congenital heart disease.

Phyllis A. Balch, CNC in her text “Prescription for Nutritional Healing” page 299 says: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a general term encompassing heart attack, stroke, and other disorders of the heart and blood vessel system.”

The term cardiovascular turns out to be fairly simple to understand. However, its varying diseases can lead to serious incapacitation and death.

AND remember,

Animal foods clog arteries and blood vessels.

A whole foods plant-based diet cleans them out.

Now that we have a sound definition of cardiovascular disease, let’s strive for healthy hearts always.

A lifestyle of plant-based nutrition will avail you continued fun in the sun.
